Born on Christmas Day in Oregon's John Day Valley. Attended Oregon State University. Enrolled in the ROTC program and obtained his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. Joined the 10th Mountain Division during its deployment to Italy. Was assigned to the 85th Infantry Regiment, Company G as a platoon leader in charge of approximately forty men.
